Library Snap Shot Day 2023: Library Snapshot Day occurs on various dates throughout the first half of the year. This year’s event occurs on April 1. It is an engaging method for capturing the daily activities of libraries and the amount of community support they receive. Sharing images, testimonials, and statistics about libraries in order to demonstrate their immeasurable impact on communities and society. It is an opportunity for libraries to reach out to their constituency for support and to promote themselves as community pillars by sharing personal and statistical information regarding their influence.
HISTORY OF LIBRARY SNAP SHOT DAY
Library Snapshot Day was established in New Jersey in 2007 in response to the query “What would happen if libraries disappeared, even for a day?”The New Jersey Library Association and the New Jersey State Library advocated for a nationwide commemoration in 2009, following the success of their inaugural celebrations. Currently, it is observed in 38 states throughout the United States.
It seeks to demonstrate the importance and value of libraries to communities, as well as their roles in providing a conducive environment for reading, learning, and generally escaping the outside world. It is an opportunity to tell the story of how many books are checked out each week, how many people the library has assisted in finding employment, and how they assist students in restocking their assignment supplies. On Library Snapshot Day, anecdotes and statistics are shared to demonstrate the public value of libraries.
Participants have utilised the results of various Library Snapshot Days to raise awareness among government officials, media entities, and other stakeholders about the significance and budgetary requirements of libraries.
The majority of this information is compiled for use in future reports by library associations and local administrations across the nation. The objective is to collect as much qualitative and quantitative information as feasible in order to persuade stakeholders to maintain funding and remind them of their effects. Occasionally, a visual or a personal statement can be more persuasive than raw data. This information is also incorporated into library activities designed to attract more visitors and raise awareness. Libraries are hubs of activity and creativity. One image is sufficient to convey the narrative.
