Ray attended the Central School of Speech and Drama, the London Centre for Theatre Studies, the Desmond Jones school of Physical Theatre, and BADA during his time in London. She earned a master’s degree in acting from the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA) in 2004.
Ray made a concerted effort not to accept any film offers until she had completed her education. While she was still at ALRA, she received a second call from Deepa Mehta, who made her an offer she could not refuse: the lead role of Kalyani in Mehta’s highly anticipated and ultimately highly controversial film Water. Lisa spoke her lines in Hindi in the film, but her voice was dubbed in the final cut.
