Lizzo was born in Detroit, Michigan on April 27, 1988 to parents Shari Johnson Jefferson and Michael Jefferson. When she was 10 years old, her family relocated to Houston, Texas, where she received classical flute training. In 2006, she graduated from the Alief Elsik High School in Houston.

After establishing a small musical group called Conrow Clique with her friends at the age of 14, she was given the nickname ‘Lizzo’. Lizzo studied classical flute at the University of Houston, and her father passed away at age 21. After his death, she relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she spent a year living in her vehicle while attempting to break into the music industry.
