Lok Sabha 2019: Know Nusrat Jahan, TMC hope for Basirhat constituency

Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, a list which had 41% women candidates. One name in the list is that of famous actor Nusrat Jahan, the latest movie celebrity to jump into politics.

Nusrat Jahan who has predominantly worked in the Tollywood industry, said on contesting the elections that she is thrilled to have the responsibility, “We talk about women emancipation all the time. But with so many women joining politics, the scenario is changing,” she added as quoted by TOI.

On how would she want to help society as politician, “As you grow up, you tend to realise your responsibilities towards your work and people in general. As an actor, I have always tried to do things that can help people in some way or the other. So, I would continue doing the same irrespective of which profession I undertake in the near future,” Nusrat told the news website.

Jahan started had acting her screen career with Raj Chakraborty’s directorial Shotru. And has also appeared in Khoka 420, under the Eskay Movies production house. Her famous movies include Khiladi, with Ankush Hazra, Sondhe Namar Agey. She has won the title of Fair One Miss Kolkata 2010.

Jahan was born in a Bengali Muslim family in Kolkata. She completed her schooling from Our Lady Queen of the Missions School following which she did her B.Com. degree from Bhawanipur College, Kolkata.

Jahan is set to contest from the Basirhat constituency, a constituency from which the party had won in the fifteenth as well as sixteenth Lok Sabha elections. Haji Nurul Islam and Idris Ali had respectively won in the two elections.
