Lok Sabha Elections 2019: BJP IT cell runs NaMo TV, confirms party

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday admitted that NaMo TV (a feature of NaMo App) is run by its Information technology cell.

“NaMo TV is a feature of NaMo app which is run by BJP IT cell. Party has taken slots on DTH for which provisions are there to show it,” Amit Malviya, head of BJP IT Cell, was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. “We have not yet received the circular from the Election Commission. Once we get it, we will look into it, and respond in detail,” Malviya further added.

The Delhi Chief Electoral Office’s Media Certification and Monitoring Committee on Wednesday said to the Election Commission (EC) that NaMo TV content – pre-aired speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, do not qualify as advertisements.  The poll body had asked the Delhi chief electoral officer to direct its media monitoring panel to check if the political content on NaMo TV was pre-certified.

Top officials at the Delhi Chief Electoral Office told the daily that Media Certification and Monitoring Committee had certified the NaMo TV logo, and that the panel did not have the mandate to certify the content. “The Election Commission’s order on NaMo TV is expected on Thursday,” the officer further added.

The development comes hours after the Election Commission stalled the release of biopic PM Narendra Modi until the end of polling. The film was earlier slated to appear at the cinemas on April 11, the date of the first phase of voting.
