Lok Sabha elections 2019: Azam threatens to boycott polls over Urdu Gate demolition

Rampur: Samajwadi Party leader Mohammad Azam Khan has threatened to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha elections over the demolition of Urdu Gate and the shifting of Unani Hospital inside the Madrassa-I-Aliya building, which was occupied by his Trust.

“The BJP wants to control all the institutions in the country and it has been successful to an extent. The Rampur unit of the party has announced that they will boycott the Parliament elections,” senior Samajwadi Party politician and Rampur MLA, Azam Khan, said while addressing workers.

“The state government and local officials are responsible for the volatile situation in Rampur. They have created a Jammu and Kashmir-like situation here. So, how can we expect impartial election in this kind of an environment?, Azam asked.

Claiming that they have not initiated action against any institution Rampur DM said as quoted by TOI, “All these allegations levelled by Azam Khan against the authorities are false and baseless. The gate was demolished because it was illegally constructed. Possession of the government-owned guest house and the power house station was taken because it is a public property. And to preserve the centuries-old Islamic culture, the Unani Hospital was again brought into the building of Madrassa-I-Aliya.”

Khan’s son Abdullah Azam, had earlier accused the BJP of harassing Muslims so badly that they were left with only two options: give up Islam or join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Irked at the demolition of ‘Urdu Gate’ in Rampur by the Uttar Pradesh government, the MLA had said: “Atrocities on Muslims have reached an unbearable level.”

Abdullah had slammed Rampur District Magistrate Aanjaney Kumar Singh for blindly following the BJP government’s orders. “He will do all that is possible to harass Muslims in the constituency,” Khan said.
