On Wednesday, the Madras High Court has issued directions to the government to ban download of widely popular lip-syncing app TikTok. The court said that the Chinese app has reportedly triggered self-harm and using the app is harmful to the children as they can easily be lured by the strangers. It also said that it can spoil the mindset of the children and their future can be spoiled too.

The court has also issued directions for the media from telecasting videos made on the app. The court has said in a statement “The Government has to answer whether the Union of India will enact a statute, like Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, enacted by the United States, to prevent the children becoming cyber/online victims.”

In March, Tamil Nadu’s Information Technology Minister M Manikandan said that the government will recommend the Centre to ban the app in response to a request by Nagapattinam MLA Thamimun Ansari.  The court heard the petition that said TikTok app contained degrading culture and encouraged pornography along with explicit content that can cause social stigma and medical health issues amongst the teens.

The court observed that “Majority of the teens are playing pranks, gaffing around with duet videos and sharing with split screen to the strangers. The children who use the said application are vulnerable and may expose them to sexual predators.”

The court also cited ‘Blue Whale Challenge’ and said even though the game was banned by the court officials have not learned that they should be alert with this kind of problems. However, it led to suicide cases but it was not the only app that would have banned. Any messaging service could have been used to play the game that reportedly assigned a self-harming task to users.

The court order is sure to come as a relief for the Tamil Nadu government which had previously sought a ban on the app.
