In 1955, he was the first recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for his outstanding contribution to the neo-romanticism movement in Hindi literature. His work “Him Taringini” continues to be popular in literary circles. He was awarded the D.Litt. title conferred by Sagar University. (Doctor of Literature) Honorable in 1959. Makhanlal was the editor of the nationalist publications Prabha and then Karmaveer.

Life and Education of Makhanlal Chaturvedi in His Youth

Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born in Babai village, Hoshangabad district, Madhya Pradesh on April 4, 1889. His mother’s name was Sundaribai, and his father’s name was Nandlal Chaturvedi. His spouse was Gearsy Bai.

Chaturvediji received his early education in the village of Bawai, and after completing his primary education, he learned Sanskrit, Bengali, Gujarati, English, etc. at home. At age 16, Makhanlalji became a schoolteacher. From 1906 to 1910, he taught at a school. Makhanlal Chaturvediji is also known by the moniker “Panditji.”

After a few days of teaching, Chaturvedi ji began his duties as editor of the national magazine. In 1913 A.D., he began editing the national monthly magazines Prabha and Karmaveer. Inspired by Kanpur’s Shri Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, he began to participate in the national movement. In the interim, he was sent to jail multiple times.

From 1986 to 1910, Makhanlal Chaturvedi taught at the school. But soon Makhanlal decided to dedicate his life and writing skills to the independence of his country. But the British could never impede his progress.

After leaving the teaching profession in 1910, Chaturvediji began working as an editor for national magazines, including “Prabha” and “Karmaveer.” Panditji’s writing style instilled a sense of patriotism in a large portion of the nation. His speeches were full of power and his writings were as full of love for the country. 1943 was the year that Makhanlal Chaturvedi ji presided over the “All India Sahitya Sammelan.” Numerous of his works are instrumental in igniting the nation’s youth with enthusiasm.

Style of Makhanlal Chaturvedi’s Language

In his writing, Shri Makhanlal Chaturvedi employed a novel style. This style is known as the Neo-romanticism style of the Chhayavaad period. He has written some of his works in this style, and because a new style was introduced into his poetry, people began to appreciate these works. As this poem has inspired generations, Shri Makhanlal Chaturvediji’s “Amar Rashtra Kavita” was also considered the Amar Kavita of Hindi literature.

Legacy

Since 1987, the Madhya Pradesh Sahitya Akademi (Madhya Pradesh Cultural Council) has held the annual ‘Makhanlal Chaturvedi Samaroh’ in his honor, in addition to presenting the annual ‘Makhanlal Chaturvedi Puraskar’ to an Indian poet for excellence in poetry.

The Makhanlal Chaturvedi Rashtriya Patrakarita Vishwavidyalaya at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh has been named in his honour.

Death

Makhanlal Chaturvedi ji died on January 30, 1968, at Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh India.

Hoshangabad renamed:

On the occasion of his birth anniversary, the village in Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, where the legendary Hindi writer, journalist, and freedom fighter Pandit Makhanlal Chaturvedi was born was renamed “Makhan Nagar” in his honour.

Chaturvedi was born on April 4, 1889 in the Hoshangabad village of Babai.

Notably, Hoshangabad, which is located 70 kilometres from Bhopal on the southern banks of the river Narmada, has been renamed Narmadapuram, and Chaturvedi’s birthplace will now be known as Makhan Nagar. Earlier in February, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the announcement after receiving approval from the Centre. Chouhan’s flagship initiative will be implemented in every village, town, and district of Madhya Pradesh by the end of the year.

Chaturvedi was the editor of “Karmaveer” and “Prabha,” and his popular poetry includes “Pushp ki Abhilasha.” Chaturvedi was the commander of the ‘Jhanda Satyagraha’ and actively participated in the non-cooperation movement of 1921-22, for which he was imprisoned. Chaturvedi, who received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1955 for his poetry collection Himtarangini and the Padma Bhushan in 1963, passed away on January 30, 1968.
