Rani Mukerji returns as the super cop Shivani Shivaji Roy in this sequel of 2014 film Maardani. This time she is up against a ruthless young serial killer, who also rapes young women before murdering them. The film revolves around Shivani trying to nab him before he strikes his new target.
In the very first frame of the movie, the tone of a chilling and gripping drama is set by the director Gopi Puthran. A brutally gripping saga of a psycho killer on the loose is been shown in the film. The dead bodies continues to rise in Rajasthan’s education hub Kota as the young killer Sunny (Vishal Jethwa) challenges Shivani to stop him if she can.
It won’t be an overstatement to say that Rani Mukerji once again steals the show with her measured and restrained act. She is the supreme power of the film as she plays gritty top cop, dealing with heinous crimes, rape victims and a violent murderer. Rani makes sure she rules each and every frame she is shown in.
The film’s antagonist Vishal Jethwa is a revelation and holds his own confidently against a solid performer like Rani. He looks innocent but delivers quite a chilling performance for a debutant.
The film’s pace is relentless and adds to the thrill even as we see the villain constantly outsmarting the cops. The first and the second half are equally engaging, with no songs to interrupt the proceedings. The background score is subtle.
The conviction in the performances and a gripping narrative ensure there’s no dull moment in Mardaani 2. Considering the scenario in the country these days, this one is a must-watch as it is aware of the undigestable realities of life which can be hard for the stomach and eyes. Also, surely a treat for those who loved Mardaani and for Rani Mukerji fans.
