Martyrdom of the Bab

Martyrdom of the Bab: The celebration of Martyrdom of the Bab on July 9 commemorates the martyrdom of one of the founders of the Bahai religion, which began in Iran in 1844. On this day, Bahais commemorate the execution of the Bab, who was convicted of apostasy in the Persian Empire in 1850 and then imprisoned alongside his adherents.

History of the Bab’s martyrdom

Sayyed Al Muammad Shráz was a merchant who resided in Shiraz and worked as a merchant in Bushehr, a coastal city. At the age of 30, he was accused of apostasy and was promptly imprisoned and sentenced to death. Numerous eyewitness accounts of miracles surrounding the execution and subsequent events are reflected in the manner in which the Martyrdom of the Bab is commemorated.

A firing squad would execute the condemned individual. Nevertheless, according to one account, the Bab abruptly vanished when he and a companion were executed by firing squad. The prison officers discovered him and his assistant back in their cell. After this, the Bab was again taken to the firing squad, and the execution was completed.

According to another account, the companions feared that the officials of the Empire would desecrate the corpse of the Prophet, so they waited before interring his remains. As a result, they transported the body from place to place until they reached the city of Haifa in modern-day Israel, where they interred it and erected a shrine in his honour.

Since then, the Martyrdom of the Bab has been commemorated globally, and on these two days, adherents refrain from working.
