Matthew Timothy Healy was born in Manchester, England, on April 8, 1989, to actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy. His parents had frequent social interactions with actors and musicians when he was a child. At age four, Healy began playing drums with his father and developed an appreciation for music. His parents divorced in 2012, and his mother began dating Lincoln Townley, whom she eventually married. He grew up with his younger brother Louis in Newcastle and Cheshire. Inspired by him, his brother currently plays music on YouTube. In 2004, Healy and his friends Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann, and George Daniel began jamming at Wilmslow High School. They began by covering punk rock and pop songs before beginning to write their own at age 15.

Facedown, their debut EP, was released in 2012 and played on national radio, with ‘The City’ becoming a smash hit on BBC Radio 1. They played music for recreation rather than as a profession. Consequently, their initial success was a surprise to them. However, the response from their fans motivated them to pursue their careers with greater dedication. In the same year as the release of their second EP, the single ‘Chocolate’ peaked at number 19 on the U.K. Singles Chart.
