Max Verstappen Nürburgring Entry: Why He’s Racing a Mercedes GT3?

Max Verstappen Nürburgring Entry:The 2026 motorsport calendar delivered a rare and headline-grabbing crossover moment as Max Verstappen took to the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife not in a Red Bull Formula 1 car but behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GT3. The highly anticipated run marks the beginning of his endurance racing preparations and has instantly become one of the most talked-about developments in global motorsport this week.

Max Verstappen Nürburgring Entry

The four-time Formula 1 world champion has shocked both fans and paddock personnel by competing in the Nürburgring Endurance Series NLS as part of his training schedule for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Verstappen is racing a Red Bull-backed Mercedes-AMG GT3 which Winward Racing operates through his personal racing team called “Verstappen Racing.”

The Nordschleife track, which features a 25-kilometre route known as the Green Hell, serves as the testing location for the current track testing. Track testing serves as a part of their training program which consists of various endurance competitions that lead up to their major 24-hour race scheduled for May.

The track commenced activities with the start of qualifying sessions which took place on Saturday morning. The track activities continued with a four-hour endurance race which enabled Verstappen to gain essential driving experience on one of the world’s most complex racing circuits.

Nürburgring Endurance Series

The Nürburgring Nordschleife track stands as one of the most difficult racing courses which motor racing circuits have ever created because it contains blind crests and high-speed turns and lacks sufficient space for drivers to recover from accidents.

Verstappen’s presence in this event goes beyond a brief performance. The Dutch driver has long expressed his desire to compete in endurance racing, calling the Nürburgring 24 Hours a “bucket list” event.

For the 24-hour race, Verstappen will be joined by an experienced and competitive driver lineup consisting of:

  • Max Verstappen
  • Dani Juncadella
  • Jules Gounon
  • Lucas Auer

“The Nurburgring Nordschleife is a special place,” said Verstappen.

“There’s no other track like it. The 24h Nürburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now.”

“Last year, I was able to get my DMSB Permit Nordschleife and participate in NLS9, that we won.

“That preparation is very valuable, as we have learned a lot that we can take into our programme this year with NLS2 and the 24-hour race.”

“We’ve got a strong line-up with Dani, Jules and Lucas and great support from Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport. Now it’s about putting in the right preparations before the events, so we can maximise everything in the races.”

Mercedes–Red Bull Crossover

The most captivating element of this narrative originates from the actual equipment which drives the story. Verstappen who serves as the main face of Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 now competes with a GT3 vehicle which uses Mercedes engines while still displaying Red Bull sponsorship.

The uncommon partnership between these two organizations demonstrates how endurance racing operates with different rules because manufacturers can move between different race teams unlike the strict boundaries which exist in Formula 1. The driver expansion through his personal racing team demonstrates Verstappen’s increasing desire to build his presence beyond Formula 1.

Strong Line-Up and Winning Ambitions

Verstappen is not alone in this venture. At the Nürburgring 24 Hours race he will drive together with three skilled GT drivers who include Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer to create a strong and balanced driver team.

Motorsport analysts believe this combination could make the Verstappen Racing entry a genuine contender in the GT3 category because it combines top F1 drivers with experienced endurance racers.

The timing of this endurance debut is particularly significant. Verstappen has experienced difficulties during the 2026 Formula 1 season because he publicly stated that Red Bull The Red Bull car was difficult to drive and did not perform well.

His participation will not conflict with his Formula1 obligations because the endurance events are scheduled during the time between Grand Prix weekends.
