After a New York player won the $483 million drawing on April 14 and a Massachusetts player won the $20 million drawing on April 18, the Mega Millions jackpot reset twice. A player from Maine won the estimated $1.35 billion drawing on January 14, a player from New York won the $20 million drawing on January 17, a player from Massachusetts won the $31 million drawing on January 24, and a player from Massachusetts won the $31 million drawing on January 31.

The January 14 Mega Millions drawing presented the game’s second-largest jackpot and the fourth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. MegaMillions.com indicates that the possibilities of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,500,000.

Four times in the game’s history, the Mega Millions jackpot has surpassed $1 billion. In October 2018, a ticket sold in South Carolina won $1.537 billion ($878 million cash value), the highest jackpot for a single ticket and the largest cash value for a single ticket in the world.

In 2021, the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots were greater than $1.7 billion combined.

On Friday, January 22, 2021, the Mega Millions jackpot reached $1.05 billion, with a cash option of $776.6 million, before a participant in Michigan matched all six numbers. The jackpot was the second greatest cash prize in the history of the lottery.

On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, the Powerball jackpot reached $731,1 million, with a cash option worth $546,8 million, before a participant in Maryland matched all six numbers. The jackpot was the third highest cash value for a single lottery ticket in the history of the lottery, and the fourth largest in the history of Powerball.

Both jackpots increase with each subsequent game until a winning ticket is drawn matching all six numbers drawn, including the “gold ball” or Powerball in each respective game.
