Minimum Wage in NY: The minimum wage in New York will go up by 50 cents in 2025.
The Labor Department of the state says the prices will rise on January 1. In New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island, it now costs $16.50 an hour to work. It is now $15.50 an hour for everyone else in the state, including people in Upstate New York.
The rise is approximately 3.1% for the New York City region and 3.3% for the remainder of the state. Not just this but the taxes will also go up automatically by the state in January 2025 and early 2026.
In May, Governor Kathy Hochul’s office said that the minimum wage would go up by an extra $0.50 per year until it reached $15.50 by 2025 and $16 an hour by 2026.
The rises will go on after 2026 in order to protect New York workers’ purchasing power. The Northeastern region’s Consumer Price Index for Salaried and Office Workers will be the basis for determining minimum wage increases beginning in 2027.
The hikes are not assured because the Act contains measures that allow the pay to be frozen in the event that the state’s economy suffers. Over the past ten years, New York has seen a significant increase in the minimum wage.
Ten years ago, the hourly wage was $7.25. The pay will have climbed by more than 120% from that level in Upstate New York once the most recent round of hikes take effect.
