Aizwal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold three rallies in poll-bound Mizoram today amidst the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) statewide agitation call.

This the first visit by the PM to the state in the last one year. He visited Mizoram in December last year.

Narendra Modi is going to address three public rallies in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Serchip.

The 40-member legislative assembly in Mizoram goes to polls on November 28. Bhartiya Janata Party has declared the list of 37 candidates out of 40 assembly constituencies.

Mizoram has a total of 7.68 lakhs registered voters out of which 3.74 lakh are male and 3.93 lakh are female.

Security has been beefed up in Aizawl in view of the MPCC call of state wide agitation against PM Modi’s visit.

The ruling Congress is eying for the third consecutive term and is in power since 2008. In 2013 state assembly election Congress won the 34 seats out of 40.

While Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF) are contesting in all the 40 constituencies this time, BJP is fighting in 39 seats.

Mizoram is the only state in the Northeast where Congress is in power and BJP is keen to win this last fort of Congress. They have already formed the government in Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

On the other hand, Congress who was in power among the five states of Northeast, just about two years ago which included Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, this is the last hope to keep its significance alive in the Northeast region.
