Mizoram Statehood Day 2021: Date, Significance & History on 34th Anniversary 

Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972 when it was carved out as a Union Territory. In 1986 the Indian Parliament adopted the 53rd amendment of the Indian Constitution, which allowed for the creation of the State of Mizoram on 20 February 1987, as India's 23rd state.

Mizoram is celebrating its 34th Statehood Day on 20th February 2021, along with another hill state of the northeast, Arunachal Pradesh. Aizawl is the seat of the government and capital city of Mizoram.

20th February every year is celebrated as Mizoram Statehood Day every year. 

History and Significance: Mizoram 

Mizoram got its name after the Lushai Hills district was declared a union territory in 1972. Mizoram became a full-fledged federal state of the Indian Union in 1986. The Mizoram Peace Accord was signed between the Mizo National Front and the Union Government on June 30, 1986, and after the accord, Mizoram attained statehood on February 20, 1987.

Mizoram’s population was 1,091,014 according to the 2011 census. It is the 2nd least populous state in the country. Mizoram covers an area of approximately 21,087 square kilometers. About 91% of the state is forest.

Mizoram shares its borders with three of the Seven Sister States of old Assam, namely Tripura, Assam, and Manipur. The state also shares a 722-kilometer border with the neighboring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
