After significant repairs and renovations, the more than a century-old bridge, which had reopened on October 26, collapsed at around 6.30 p.m.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each person killed in the bridge collapse. Those who have been injured will receive Rs 50000 in compensation.
According to state minister Brijesh Merja, over 60 people were killed when a 140-year-old suspension cable bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi collapsed on Sunday evening. When the bridge snapped, about 400 people were on it, and about 100 fell into the river. Rescue operations are underway, and NDRF teams have arrived on the scene.
According to officials, the recently renovated bridge collapsed because it could not support the weight of the people standing on it. They also stated that there was a rush of people on the bridge, which had only been reopened to the public four days prior after renovation work, when it snapped around 6.30 p.m.
For six months, the famous suspension bridge near Mani Mandir was closed for renovations. A private operator renovated it at a cost of Rs 2 crore. Due to the Diwali holiday and the fact that it was a Sunday, there was a rush of tourists on the bridge, which is a major tourist attraction and a British engineering marvel. On October 26, the Gujarati New Year, it was reopened to the public.
Morbi Bridge’s history
Mumbai governor Richard Temple dedicated the bridge on February 20, 1879. It was finished in 1880 at a cost of around Rs 3.5 lakh at the time. It was built to connect Darbargarh and Nazarbagh and was entirely made in England.
This hanging pool now connects Mahaprabhuji’s seat and the entire Samakantha area. This suspension bridge is over 140 years old and spans 765 feet.

On Monday, the chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, arrived at the hospital in Morbi where multiple bridge collapse victims are being treated.
I extend my sympathies. How the bridge fell after five or six days of being inaugurated, and who permitted so many people there, should be the subject of an investigation led by a retired SC/HC judge. Victims should receive all essential assistance, including compensation.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that rescue operations by the SDRF and firefighters are underway in Morbi. They will soon be joined by NDRF, SRPF, navy, army, and air force teams. "In the Morbi tragedy, rescue operations are underway by the SDRF team and firefighters." According to the chief minister's office, three platoons of the NDRF, 50 navy personnel, 30 IAF personnel, two columns of army personnel, and seven fire brigade teams had left for Morbi with advanced equipment from Rajkot, Jamnagar, Diu, and Surendranagar. It was also announced that three SDRF and two platoons of State Reserve Police were on their way to Morbi for rescue and relief operations. A treatment isolation ward has also been established at Rajkot Civil Hospital.
NDRF DIG Mohsen Shahidi said two more NDRF teams were being airlifted from Vadodara airport to Rajkot airport.
