Morbi Bridge Collapse LIVE: Over 60 dead in suspension bridge collapse, NDRF team at spot

Morbi Bridge Collapse LIVE Updates: Police have filed a FIR on culpable homicide charges against the agencies in charge of maintaining and operating the bridge in Morbi City, which collapsed on Sunday evening. Sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 of the Indian Penal Code were used to file the case (attempt to commit culpable homicide).

Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, went to the city of Morbi in the state on Sunday night to assess the rescue efforts that are still going on after a recently repaired suspension bridge over the Machchhu River collapsed in the early evening, killing at least 132 people. After significant repairs and renovations, the more than a century-old bridge, which had reopened on October 26, collapsed at around 6.30 p.m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each person killed in the bridge collapse. Those who have been injured will receive Rs 50000 in compensation.

According to state minister Brijesh Merja, over 60 people were killed when a 140-year-old suspension cable bridge on the Machchhu river in Gujarat’s Morbi collapsed on Sunday evening. When the bridge snapped, about 400 people were on it, and about 100 fell into the river. Rescue operations are underway, and NDRF teams have arrived on the scene.

According to officials, the recently renovated bridge collapsed because it could not support the weight of the people standing on it. They also stated that there was a rush of people on the bridge, which had only been reopened to the public four days prior after renovation work, when it snapped around 6.30 p.m.

For six months, the famous suspension bridge near Mani Mandir was closed for renovations. A private operator renovated it at a cost of Rs 2 crore. Due to the Diwali holiday and the fact that it was a Sunday, there was a rush of tourists on the bridge, which is a major tourist attraction and a British engineering marvel. On October 26, the Gujarati New Year, it was reopened to the public.

Morbi Bridge’s history

Mumbai governor Richard Temple dedicated the bridge on February 20, 1879. It was finished in 1880 at a cost of around Rs 3.5 lakh at the time. It was built to connect Darbargarh and Nazarbagh and was entirely made in England.

This hanging pool now connects Mahaprabhuji’s seat and the entire Samakantha area. This suspension bridge is over 140 years old and spans 765 feet.
