Narottam Mishra Bio: Narottam Mishra is an Indian politician who serves as the minister of Home Affairs, Law and Legislative Affairs, Prisons, and Parliamentary Affairs for the state of Madhya Pradesh. In the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, he represents the Datia constituency as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Narottam Mishra Biography:

Dr. Narottam Mishra was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India on April 15, 1960 (age 62 as of 2022). He attended Gwalior’s Sant Kanwar Ram Higher Secondary School. Narottam earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from one of Gwalior’s colleges. Jiwaji University awarded him the master’s degree in Hindi. He pursued a PhD in Hindi Literature at Jiwaji University in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in 1998.

Politics

In the years 1977 and 1978, Narottam Mishra began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bharatiya Jana Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

(MLA) Member of Legislative Assembly

In 1990, Narottam Mishra was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Dabra constituency. He lost the elections in 1993. In 1998, Narottam was re-elected from the Dabra assembly district. In 2008, he won his third election to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Datia constituency and in 2013-2018, Narottam was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly and represented the Datia constituency.

Minister

In 2005, he served as a minister for the Madhya Pradesh administration under Babulal Gaur, the 16th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected Minister of Parliamentary Affairs on 1 June 2005 and Minister of Law on 12 December 2008 and 27 August 2007 respectively. He was appointed Minister of Education on 29 November 2005 and served until 27 August 2007. Between 27 August 2007 and 12 December 2008, Narottam Mishra served as Minister of Urban Development. From 28 October 2009 until 14 December 2013, he served again as Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs.

Narottam was appointed Minister of Housing on 26 May 2010 and served until 14 December 2013. Narottam Mishra served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare from 27 January 2011 until 14 December 2013. Mishra served as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs from 21 December 2013 to 17 December 2018 on a second occasion.

On 21 December 2013, he was also appointed Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Minister of Medical Education, and Minister of AYUSH; he held these positions until 4 July 2016 and was concurrently elected Minister of Information & Public Relations, a position he held until 17 December 2018. From 4 July 2016 to 17 December 2018, Narottam also served as Water Resources Minister. From 21 April 2020 to 13 July 2020, Narottam Mishra served as Minister of Health & Family Welfare for the third time. He was also elected as Minister of Home Affairs on April 21, 2020. Narottam Mishra Controversies:

Election Commission (EC)-banned

Several local newspapers, including Dainik Bhaskar and Nai Dunia, reportedly published an article in November 2008 praising Narottam Mishra with the headline “this is why Narottam is different from the others” Later, it was revealed that the news was sponsored by Narottam Mishra during the election year. According to some sources, similar articles were available on election day, i.e., November 27, 2008.

According to the report from the Election Commission, Mishra paid for news and advertisements between November 8, 2008 and November 27, 2008, and he lied to the panel about his election expenditures. In June 2017, as a result, the Election Commission banned Narottam Mishra from running for office for three years. The Delhi High Court, on the other hand, exonerated Narottam. Following the dispute, the Election Commission (EC) appealed to the supreme court, but the court did not suspend the order of the high court; Mishra ran for and won the 2018 state elections.

Narottam Mishra: An Exemplary Man or a Reprehensible Individual

In 2013, the local magazine Jagat Vision published a cover story titled “Narottam Ya Naradham” (excellent man or despicable human) about Narottam Mishra, which included allegations of extortion, forceful possession, exploitation, corruption, ransom, and homicide against him.

In an interview, the magazine’s editor, Vijaya Pathak, discussed his statements that were included in the article about Narottam Mishra and stated that the story on Mishra was chosen because of his controversial activities. Vijaya Pathak stated in the interview,

This narrative was based on evidence. Narottam Mishra was highly contentious. We decided to write a narrative about him because he had numerous pending cases. Although most of his cases were swept under the rug, he did not sue me for defamation.”

In contrast to the allegations made in the Jagat Vision article, Narottam Mishra stated in an interview that he had received a clean bill of health from the Supreme Court of India in all corruption cases against him. Narottam Mishra said,

I only say what I believe to be correct. There are no allegations of corruption against me. According to me, paid news is not a matter of corruption, and the Supreme Court has granted me solace in this regard. Regarding the harassment of Congress members, the case against them in Datia was submitted by their district president, not a BJP employee.”

Narottam Mishra Corruption:

Additionally, Narottam Mishra has been accused of corruption. According to some media reports, Narottam allegedly received billions of rupees after awarding a contract worth Rs. 267 billion to a Hyderabad-based construction film. It is alleged that the funds were transmitted through shell corporations to one of his confidants, Mukesh Sharma, and approximately fourteen farmers from his Dabra constituency at the time. Approximately Rs. 9.5 crores were reportedly routed through the firms, of which Rs. 5 crores were used to purchase the land.

According to a report from the Income Tax Department, documents were discovered in Mukesh Shamra’s home claiming that 14 residents of Dabra, Madhya Pradesh, were unable to purchase the expensive land that was purchased for Narottam Mishra in Ratanpur, Bhopal, with the alleged amount. In contrast, the income tax tribunal granted Mishra relief after he filed an appeal against the aforementioned report. According to reports, the income tax tribunal sought to impose a tax on Narotam Mishra’s alleged unreported income and submitted an appeal with the Madhya Pradesh High Court; however, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled in his favour.

Sabyasachi ‘Mangalsutra’ Campaign

In 2021, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra called a mangalsutra advertisement by the fashion house Sabyasachi “obscene and objectionable” and demanded the designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee pull the advertisement because it depicted a woman wearing a mangalsutra and a brassiere, as well as a woman wearing a mangalsutra while posing in an intimate position with a man. Netizens deemed the advertising campaign to be “against Hindu culture.” Narottam Mishra issued a warning against the advertisement and stated that “direct action” would be taken if the fashion house did not promptly remove it. In an interview in Datia, Madhya Pradesh, Mishra discussed the Sabyasachi mangalsutra ad campaign and said,

“It’s a great campaign.” I have previously cautioned against such advertisements. I am giving designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee a personal edict of 24 hours. If this objectionable and indecent advertisement is not removed, a case will be filed against him and he will be subject to legal action. The authorities will be dispatched to the scene.”

Soon after the threat, Sabyasachi retracted the campaign and issued an apology via its official social media account.

Mishra raised a similar objection to Dabur’s controversial same-sex advertisement during the Hindu women’s holiday of Karva Chauth.

Narottam Mishra in opposition to Bollywood:

Narottam Mishra was observed pointing his gun at Bollywood and delivering statements in opposition to numerous films and individuals affiliated with it – actors, directors, and producers. Reportedly, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra objected to the Deepika Padukone and Shah Rukh Khan song “Besharam Rang” from the 2023 Bollywood film “Pathaan.” According to Mishra, Deepika’s costumes in the above-mentioned song were offensive at first glance and stemmed from a tainted mindset. In an interview in Indore, Narottam Mishra commented on the matter.

If the scenes and Padukone’s costumes (in the song) are not corrected, the subject of whether or not this film should be allowed in Madhya Pradesh will be considered.”

Narottam Mishra also inspired the production of films such as ‘Adipurush’ (2023), an adaptation of the Indian mythology Ramayan by Om Raut, and ‘Kaali’ by Leena Manimekalai.
