National Anthem and Flag Day in Aruba 2024: Flag Day and the National Anthem are observed annually on March 18 in Aruba. Aruba is an island in the Caribbean Sea located to the southwest of the Lesser Antilles. And if pleasant weather, acclaim, and a location resembling an island paradise weren’t sufficient reasons for celebration, attaining autonomy is. Cornelis Albert (Shon A.) Eman, an Aruban politician, assumed the historic role of being the initial politician to formally propose the separation of Aruba from the Netherlands Antilles on March 18, 1948. Parades, athletic competitions, and culturally significant events all mark this patriotic holiday.

The History of Flag Day and National Anthem in Aruba

A politician from Aruba named Shon A. Eman was the first to formally propose the separation of Aruba from the Netherlands Antilles on March 18, 1948. On March 18, 1976, twenty-eight years later, Gilberto “Betico” Croes, commonly referred to as “The Father of the Aruban Nation,” proclaimed the inaugural National Anthem and Flag Day.

Arubans hold their national anthem and flag in the highest regard. Composed by three of the nation’s most renowned musicians—Juan Chabaya ‘Padu’ Lampe, Hubert Booi, and Rufo Wever—”Aruba Dushi Tera’ is the national anthem of Aruba. “Aruba Dushi Tera” translates to “Aruba lovely country” or “Aruba sweet land” in Papiamento. A monument honoring the composers is situated at the Plaza Padu in the heart of Oranjestad. The colors of the Aruban flag are blue, yellow, red, and white, with the blue color being a replica of the United Nations’ official emblem.

Scout parades, vintage car parades, kid- and adult-friendly cultural events, and sporting events are all ways that Arubaans traditionally observe the day. The “Bolas Criollas” sporting competition is a fan favorite in Aruba. It is a traditional team sport with Venezuelan origins that originated in Aruba as a consequence of Venezuelan migration.

Oranjestad’s Plaza Betico Croes serves as the focal point for folkloric festivities and musical performances featuring the song festival’s champions. Along major thoroughfares, house stands sell T-shirts, bandanas, banners, and headwear with an Aruba motif. As a result of the fact that National Anthem and Flag Day is a federal holiday, businesses close early or remain closed the entire day.
