What is a blueberry popover?

A blueberry popover is a type of pastry made from a batter of eggs, milk, flour, and melted butter. The batter is then poured into a muffin tin or popover pan and baked until it is puffed up and golden brown. Blueberries are usually added to the batter before baking, but they can also be added after the popovers have been cooked. Popovers are best served warm with a dollop of butter or jam.

The history of blueberry popovers

The origins of blueberry popovers are unclear, but they are believed to have originated in New England in the early 19th century. The first recorded recipe for blueberry popovers appeared in the Boston Cooking School Cook Book in 1896.

Popovers are traditionally made with a simple batter of flour, milk, eggs, and butter. Blueberries were likely added to the batter at some point to create the now-classic blueberry popover. These days, you can find blueberry popovers made with all sorts of different recipes and ingredients, but the basic principles remain the same: a light, airy batter + fresh blueberries = deliciousness!

Whether you like your popovers plain or filled with fruit, there’s no denying that these little cakes are utterly irresistible. So on this National Blueberry Popover Day, take a moment to enjoy one (or two!) of these delicious treats.
