National Boss’s Day 2023: The 16th of October is National Boss’s Day, an opportunity to honor those who keep us employed. As “boss” has been used colloquially to denote something excellent or cool, one could refer to a fantastic employer as “a boss.” Regardless of the title you give them, perform a small gesture of appreciation for the leader in your life.

The History of National Boss’s Day

In 1958, Patricia Bays Haroski petitioned the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to designate National Boss’s Days as a holiday in commemoration of her father, who concurrently held the position of her employer. She established the holiday in an effort to foster better relationships between supervisors and employees in the workplace and to bring attention to the tremendous effort that managers invest in their positions. Her belief was that younger employees did not value their supervisors sufficiently; however, she resolved to alter that perception after witnessing firsthand the efforts her father made to ensure the seamless operation of the business. It was not until four years later when Illinois Governor Otto Kerner endorsed Haroski’s registration, that the day was proclaimed a national holiday. National Boss Day is observed on October 16 each year, unless that date occurs on a weekend, in which case the following business day is observed.

Although the role of a supervisor may appear opulent to some, it is not without its challenges. It is not simply a matter of placing commands and unwinding. Bosses who are committed to the organization’s objectives oversee the operations of an entire business or department, ensuring that work flows smoothly and that significant employee concerns are addressed. Bosses have the ability to determine the success or failure of an entire workplace, and not just in terms of business. The morale and work environment of employees are influenced by the managerial style and attitude of their supervisor. Aside from facilitating work-life equilibrium, some employers even aid in paving the way and navigating professional trajectories. For this reason, National Boss Day was established: to honor and express gratitude to all exceptional supervisors for everything they do to ensure the success of a team endeavor.

Regardless of how we feel about the bosses in our lives, one thing is certain: being a boss is great. The phrases “Like a Boss” and “Girl Boss” gained significant traction on the internet shortly after their initial usage, and have since come to be applied to any task that is executed with excellence.

Furthermore, it is impossible to overlook some of the most cherished television executives. Michael Scott, the self-proclaimed “World’s Best Boss,” was first featured on the television series “The Office” in 2005. Miranda Priestly in the 2006 film “Devil Wears Prada” and J. Jonah Jameson, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Bugle and Peter Parker’s superior, are examples of less jovial supervisors we have encountered.
