National Bugs Bunny Day 2023: Date, history, Facts and Activities

National Bugs Bunny Day 2023: National Bugs Bunny Day is observed on April 30 annually. It commemorates the first apparition of this happy-go-lucky rabbit in 1938. We are preparing to spend the day in the most enjoyable manner possible by binge-watching “Looney Tunes” all day, eating carrots like Bugs Bunny, and sharing the fun on social media! Did you know that Bugs Bunny’s first appearance was in a short film and not on television or any cartoon channel?

HISTORY OF NATIONAL BUGS BUNNY DAY

Bugs Bunny, also known as the ‘Wascally Wabbit,’ debuted on April 30, 1938, in a short theatrical animation titled “Porky’s Hare Hunt.” Due to the fact that he was still known as Happy Rabbit at the time, this is not considered his first appearance by the majority of people. However, he appeared like Bugs Bunny, spoke like Bugs Bunny, and moved like Bugs Bunny.

Even though “Porky’s Hare Hunt” was the first cartoon to depict a Bugs Bunny-like rabbit, it wasn’t until “A Wild Hare” on July 27, 1940, that Bugs Bunny was officially introduced to the world. Ben Hardaway created the preliminary version of Bugs Bunny, while Tex Avery created the official version. Cal Dalton and Charles Thorson (1939–1940) designed the preliminary iteration of Bugs Bunny’s character. The official version, however, was created by Bob Givens (1940–1943) and Robert McKimson (1943–present).

Throughout World War II, Bugs Bunny’s popularity grew by leaps and bounds. His carefree demeanour became a symbol of optimism for people, and Bugs Bunny quickly rose to prominence. “Knighty Knight Bugs” (1958) won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject after World War II. Bugs Bunny received his first Oscar.
