The Background of National Crush Day

It is difficult to conceive of a world without cans in today’s society, as they are so common and indispensable. They are essentially one of the oldest methods of food preservation, dating back decades before Mason jars. Cans date back to 1795, when Napoleon offered 12,000 Francs to anyone who could invent a method of preserving food for his army and navy. After some time, a Frenchman named Nicolas Alpert invented the sterilization procedure, paving the way for canned foods. Nine years later, a British merchant named Peter Durand received a patent for preserving food in tin cans from King George III. Cans were introduced to New York City in 1819, and they rapidly gained widespread popularity in the United States.

In 1938, the Richmond, Virginia-based Kruger Brewing Company introduced “Kruger Cream Ale” as the first tinned beer. And by the 1960s, it was common for everything from tuna to motor oil to be packaged in tin cans. Popular because it could be shaped readily, could withstand carbonated pressure, was lighter, and did not rust. In 1970, the inaugural year of Earth Day, recycling began to receive significantly more attention. Today, 105,784 aluminum cans are recycled every minute in the United States, resulting in an aggregate recycling rate of nearly 50 percent, the highest recycling rate for any beverage container. Because aluminum is infinitely recyclable, 75% of all aluminum produced is still in circulation. This implies that aluminum cans contain 73% recycled material on average. Producing a can from recycled cans requires 90 percent less energy and generates 90 percent fewer emissions than producing the same can from virgin material. Remember to recycle your cans and do your best to maintain a pure planet.

The customs of the day

National Crush Day primarily refers to aluminum cans, but the larger objective is to reduce global waste and reduce our carbon footprint for a sustainable future.

Participating in campaigns for environmental sustainability are activists, organizations, and the government. The three convenient R’s, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, are the mantra of the day, and good practices such as turning off the faucet while brushing one’s teeth and using a metal straw are highly encouraged and effective. At the local and national levels, relevant organizations organize clean-up campaigns and fund-raising events.
