HISTORY OF VIETNAM’S NATIONAL DAY

Vietnam became a member of French Indochina in 1887. During the Second World War, the Japanese captured Vietnam. The French remained in Vietnam and continued to exert a small amount of influence. In August 1945, when the conflict ended, Vietnam was left without a colonial power. Vit Minh, perceiving this void, initiated the August Revolution across the nation to reclaim power from the colonisers. On August 25, 1945, Emperor Bo i abdicated, bringing an end to the Nguyn dynasty.

On September 2, 1945, in Hanoi’s Ba nh Square, Viet Minh leader Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam’s independence. This new nation will be known as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Vietnam’s name was altered to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976, when the country’s two halves were reunited and renamed. September 2 remains Vietnam’s National Day.

Following the conclusion of the Vietnam War, the Vietnamese Communist Party compiled a schedule of national holidays. These new holidays included International Labour Day on May 1, the anniversary of the August Revolution on August 19, Vietnam’s National Day on September 2, and Ho Chi Minh’s birthday on May 19. In 2019, the duration of Vietnam’s National Day was extended by one day by adding one day either before or after September 2. On these days, the nation observes a nationwide holiday.
