On the first Monday of the academic year, Harvard also hosted a football-style match. This contest was so physically taxing that it was played on “Bloody Monday.”

1865 was a pivotal year in the evolution of American football. After the Civil War, football became increasingly popular at numerous universities. The game’s fundamental principles were established, and it was granted its first patent. Rutgers defeated Princeton by a score of 6 to 4 in the first intercollegiate football contest, which was played on November 6, 1869.
