National Good Samaritan Day 2024 (US): March 13 is observed annually as National Good Samaritan Day, also known as Good Samaritan Involvement Day. It is a day to encourage and celebrate altruism and compassion, despite our differences. The expression ‘Good Samaritan’ originates from a parable in the Bible. Additionally, the day marks the burial of Catherine (Kitty) Genovese, who was murdered in New York, a short distance from her residence. Kitty’s survival is postulated to have been possible had third parties intervened during the assault. This day serves as a constant reminder to be the custodian of our brother’s affairs.

National Good Samaritan Day History

The term ‘Good Samaritan’ finds its inception in a biblical narrative, specifically one of the parables that Jesus narrated. When a religious leader inquired, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus’ reply was a parable that is documented in Luke Chapter 10, specifically in verses 30 to 37. A Jew was in the process of descending from the city of Jerusalem to Jericho. He was assaulted en route, had his clothing stolen, and was abandoned on the side of the road while half-dead.

A temple assistant and a priest passed by the injured individual but did not extend an offer of assistance. Then a Samaritan appeared.

During the biblical era, the Samaritans inhabited the northern region of the Kingdom of Israel. Antipathy arose between the Jews and Samaritans to the extent that neither group would enter the other’s territory or communicate with the other.

In the story, a despised Samaritan came across the injured person and became sympathetic to his situation. He bandaged the man’s wounds, mounted him on his donkey, and carried him to an inn, where he attended to his needs further. The Samaritan paid the innkeeper the following day and requested that he tend to the injured individual, promising to pay for any additional costs that may arise. In his final words, Jesus urged his disciples to “go and do the same.”

The observance of this particular day is wrought with remembrance for the woman who perished on March 13, 1964: Catherine Genovese. Her homicide occurred in New York. Catherine’s life could have been preserved had an individual intervened during the assault. National Good Samaritan Day serves as a constant reminder to assist others whenever possible.
