In the 1960s, fringe were popularised by Audrey Hepburn and other celebrities, and the short, curled hairstyles of Marilyn Monroe gradually gave way to the voluminous ‘Hairspray’ hairstyles.
Men and women alike sported dreadlocks, afros, the mullet, and perpetual waves, or ‘perms’, during the 1970s. To create waves and curls, hairstylists had to apply chemicals to the hair and wrap it, or conduct chemical straightening or relaxing. Can we all concur that perms belong in the 1970s?
In the twenty-first century, hair colouring and straight designs gained popularity. Today, hairstyles are diverse, ranging from dreadlocks to haircuts, and natural hair is on-trend. The stylists who, in a single appointment, can create hairstyles from different eras, alter our appearance, and alter how we feel about ourselves should be celebrated.
