She succeeded in convincing her mother to grant her permission to distribute her wealth to the less fortunate. Upon learning of this, the Governor of Syracuse, Paschasius, issued an order for her to incense the image of the emperor as a sacrifice. The governor ordered her to be defiled in a brothel upon her refusal. According to Christian tradition, the guards were unable to remove her even after tying her to a team of oxen when they arrived to take her away. They then stacked bundles of wood around her and attempted to ignite them, but they remained unburned. In approximately 304 A.D., she ultimately perished at the hands of a sword inserted into her larynx.
Her notoriety had reached such proportions by the sixth century that it was mentioned in the sacramentary of Pope Gregory I. On December 13, the Church of England observes her memory with a Lesser Festival. September 16 was formerly a feast day for Saints Lucy and Geminianus on the General Roman Calendar; however, that date was eliminated in 1969.
