National Textile Day 2023: National Textile Day is annually observed on May 3. The general public associates the term “textile” with fashion and apparel, but textiles encompass much more. In addition to carpets, curtains, and rugs, we are encircled by textiles. They consist of both natural and synthetic fibres and are available in every colour under the sun. HISTORY OF NATIONAL TEXTILE DAY

National Textile Day was established in 2016 by Valley Forge, a company that takes pride in its reputation as a global leader in the production of sustainable, high-quality fabrics. The holiday was established to demonstrate the versatility and adaptability of textiles. This event has expanded to include a variety of activities where artists, museums, cultural organisations, and fabric enthusiasts can exhibit their designs. It also acknowledges those who strive for sustainability and environmentally favourable textile production methods.

The term ‘textile’ originates from the Latin word for weaving. In 6000 B.C., the Swiss wore fabrics made of linen and wool, which have been uncovered through excavations. The Chinese began spinning silk in 2640 B.C. Utilising natural fibres and pigments. Natural fibres such as flax, cotton, wool, and silk have been largely supplanted by synthetic fibres and textiles such as rayon and spandex in the modern era.

Textiles are not merely utilitarian; they have been an art form for centuries. Quilting, needlework, embroidery, crochet, and design are all examples of textile art, which is defined as “arts and crafts that use plant, animal, or synthetic fibres to construct practical or decorative objects.” In the 20th century, so-called dying arts, such as knitting, experienced a massive revival and grew in prominence due to the rise of social media. Additionally, tailoring, weaving, and stitching are textile arts. Textile art is a form of creativity that is wearable, practical, and extremely visible. It encompasses soft furnishings, apparel, bedding, rugs, and carpets.
