2027 Social Security COLA Estimate: The Social Security Administration will not give the final 2027 COLA, until October 2026. But still new inflation reports are already giving retirees a better idea of what may happen next year. The COLA is the yearly rise in Social Security payments that helps people keep up when prices go up. It applies to retirement, survivor, disability, and SSI benefits.

The latest guess from The Senior Citizens League is a 3.8% increase for 2027. That estimate came after July 2026 inflation data was released, and it is higher than many earlier guesses made in spring and early summer. TSCL said this estimate has stayed at 3.8% in its recent update.

Why is July Important

Social Security does not pick the COLA at random. The law says the change is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W. For the COLA, the SSA looks at the third quarter of the year. That means July, August, and September are the most important months in the whole process.

Because only July data is available right now, the final number can still move up or down. If inflation stays strong in August and September, the COLA could end up higher. If prices cool off, the estimate could drop a little before the official October announcement. That is why advocacy groups and economists keep changing their forecasts as new data comes in.

What a 3.8% Increase means

If the 3.8% estimate turns out to be correct, Social Security checks would rise in January 2027 for most retirees. SSI recipients would usually see the new amount a little earlier, at the end of December 2026, because of the way that program’s payment dates work. TSCL said that if the increase took effect today, average benefits would go up by about $73.62, from $1,937.53 to $2,011.15. Other reports give a similar estimate of around $74 more a month.

Social Security Launches New Scheduling and Workload Systems

Many older Americans watch COLA estimates closely because they need to plan monthly budgets. A higher COLA sounds good, but it often comes from higher prices in the real world. Housing, healthcare, groceries, and insurance can all rise fast, so the extra money may only help cover those bigger bills.

The annual adjustment also reaches more people than just retired workers. Disability beneficiaries, survivors, spouses, and other eligible family members get it automatically. Once the SSA makes the final call in October, it usually sends notices later in the fall so people can see their new payment amounts before the year ends.
