Candy & Soda by SNAP: Idaho lawmakers have passed a new bill that stops people from using food stamps to buy candy and soda. The bill, called House Bill 109, now waits for Governor Brad Little’s signature to become law.

Last year, over 130,000 people in Idaho used SNAP benefits (food stamps) to buy groceries. Across the U.S., about 42 million people rely on this program each month. But Idaho wants to change what can be bought with these benefits.

The bill passed with strong support in both the Idaho House (48-20) and Senate (25-10). It stops SNAP users from spending their benefits on candy and soft drinks. However, before the rule takes effect, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must approve it.

Right now, no state bans junk food purchases with SNAP. But other places, like Oklahoma, are considering similar rules. According to Marca, a US Congressman, Josh Brecheen, even proposed a national “Healthy SNAP Act” to block candy, soda, ice cream, and desserts from being bought with food stamps.SNAP benefits help low-income families buy food. Currently, the rules only stop people from buying alcohol, tobacco, and hot prepared meals. But some lawmakers say unhealthy snacks shouldn’t be allowed either.
