Federal Student Loans 2025: Getting money for college doesn’t have to be confusing if you know when to apply and what to do. The first step is filling out the FAFSA form, which helps you get federal loans, grants, and other financial help for school.
For the 2025-2026 school year, the FAFSA opened on November 18, 2024. You can submit it until June 30, 2026 – but waiting too long could mean missing out on some types of aid.
“Submit your FAFSA as early as possible,” says a financial aid expert, “because funds can run dry if you delay.” Some money, like work-study jobs and special grants, goes to students who apply first.

Federal Student Loans 2025: Important Deadlines
While the final federal deadline isn’t until 2026, your state and college probably want your FAFSA much sooner:
- California students should apply by April 2, 2025 for best results
- Florida’s deadline comes on May 15, 2025
- Most schools want your form before summer
Check with your college’s financial aid office to learn their exact dates. Missing these earlier deadlines might mean getting less help.
What You Need to Apply for Federal Student Loans
Before starting your FAFSA get these documents:
- Your Social Security number
- Tax information
- Your parents’ financial details (if they still support you)
Having these ready makes the process faster and helps avoid mistakes.
It takes about 3-5 days for your FAFSA to process online. Once approved, your school will tell you what aid you qualify for. First time borrowers need to do two more things:
- Complete a short online lesson about loans
- Sign a Master Promissory Note (this is your loan agreement)

While private loans are always available, they do not have the same benefits as federal loans , like possible loan forgiveness. The trick is to apply early, meet all deadlines, and ask questions if you are unsure.
