UPI Payment System Expands to Nepal, Enabling Indian Users to Make Transactions

New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster digital payment security, the Indian government has rolled out a new service designed to preemptively flag potential cyber fraud and money scams. Called the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI), this tool aims to provide an early warning system against mobile numbers associated with fraudulent activities, offering a much-needed layer of protection for the millions of Indians who rely on UPI for their daily transactions.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has integrated the FRI into its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), creating a robust mechanism for intelligence sharing among banks, UPI service providers, and various financial institutions. This collaborative approach is critical in the ongoing battle against the ever-evolving tactics of cyber fraudsters.

How FRI Protects You:

At its core, FRI works by performing a real-time validation check on mobile numbers involved in digital payments. Before a transaction is processed, the system analyzes various data sources to assess the fraud risk level of the associated mobile number. This multi-layered analysis helps stakeholders, including your bank and UPI app, determine if a number has been flagged for suspicious behavior.

Mobile numbers are categorized into three risk levels: medium, high, and very high. This classification is based on intelligence gathered from banks, financial institutions, cases registered with the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP), and inputs from DoT’s own Chakshu platform. This means if a number has been previously linked to cybercrime or has been disconnected due to suspicious activity, FRI will identify it.

When a financial institution flags a number, the DIP system conducts a deeper analysis and immediately shares this fraud risk level with all participating stakeholders. This rapid information dissemination allows banks and UPI providers to take swift action. For instance, PhonePe, an early adopter of FRI, is already blocking transactions from “very high” risk numbers and developing pre-transaction warnings for “medium risk” ones.

This proactive measure by the government underscores its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure digital payment ecosystem for all Indian citizens and expats globally. For UPI users, this new service offers greater peace of mind, allowing them to transact digitally with enhanced confidence, knowing that an advanced system is working behind the scenes to safeguard their money.
