New York City is spending more than $1 million a day to protect US president-elect Donald Trump and his family, US officials said.
The New York city police have been assigned to protect Donald Trump, his adult children and his grand children.
The costs are not expected to drop significantly after Trump’s inauguration as his wife Melania Trump and 10-year old son were expected to stay at their home at Trump Tower in Manhattan, at least until the end of school year, CNN reported.
Trump Tower is situated in Fifth Avenue, one of the New York’s busiest neighbourhoods. The strict security enforcement will lead to the loss of a block in the 56th street.
Trump has made it clear he plans to be in New York regularly and will make frequent visits, especially while his family is there.
“The number one imperative here is safety and security. We owe that to the president elect, his family and his team,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told media.
“This is a very substantial undertaking. It will take substantial resources. We will begin the conversation with the federal government shortly on reimbursement for the NYPD for some of the costs that we are incurring,” he added.
NYPD’s primary duty will be assisting the Secret Service, responsible for the protection of US president or president-elect, particularly in controlling the movement of general public, Daily Mail reported.
The police have set up barricades around Trump Tower and will close streets in accordance with Trump’s visit.
