500 Notes from ATMs: A message has been going viral on WhatsApp saying that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has told banks to stop giving Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025. But this message is totally fake. The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check Unit, which checks if government-related news is real or not, said clearly that RBI has given no such order. People started getting confused and worried because of this false news, and that’s why the government had to step in and clear the confusion.
The PIB team posted on their X handle (which used to be called Twitter) and denied the message. They said, “No such instruction has been issued by the RBI.” They also added that Rs 500 notes are still legal, and people can keep using them just like before. The Fact Check Unit also reminded everyone that they should not believe or share any news until it is confirmed by a real and official source.

It’s Important to stay Alert
This fake news was shared in many WhatsApp groups and reached a lot of people very fast. Some believed it without checking and started spreading it even more.
RBI is the main body that controls India’s money and banks, and they have not said anything like what the message claimed. If there was any big decision like this, RBI would have shared it properly through their official website or through news outlets. There is no update or notice on their website that talks about removing Rs 500 notes or stopping their use in ATMs.
These kinds of fake forwards are becoming more common now because of how fast messages spread on apps like WhatsApp. Anyone can make up a message, add the name of a big organisation like RBI, and send it to thousands of people in seconds. That’s why it’s very important to think before believing.
Rs 500 Notes Are Safe
Rs 500 notes are safe to use right now, they are not being cancelled or removed from the system. The message is a hoax and must be ignored. The PIB Fact Check Unit keeps warning people to not share news unless it is verified. They also said that if anyone gets a message that looks suspicious, they should report it instead of sending it to others.

There have been such fake messages before too, like ones saying there will be another demonetization or that new rules are coming for currency notes. But RBI always shares such news only through official announcements. They never use WhatsApp forwards to tell the public about big changes.
