No Tamil releases from Friday, producers want govt to remove local body tax

In a protest against the levy of 10 per cent local body tax, the Tamil Film Producers Council has decided not to release any new Tamil film from Friday. Taking into consideration that film producers were facing issues after execution of Goods and Services Tax from July 1, the body said the move of levying an added 10 per cent local body tax has come as a ‘shock’. There’s been a 28 per cent GST on movies.

“The council has already expressed its stand on the issue during various meetings with otest officials,” it said. The council has decided in a meeting on Tuesday to request the government to pull out the local body tax.

Now, the council has written to the Tamil Nadu government requesting removal of the levy of local body tax today. Theatres across the state had remained closed for a few days after the implementation of the GST. It opened after a request by the government and the declaration to form a committee to look into their demands.
