Amid rising cases of child abuse and sexual assault in schools, union minister, Maneka Gandhi has suggested that drivers, conductors and non-teaching staff in schools should be women. The women and child development (WCD) minister said that her department has also approached the human resource development ministry in this regard.

“We have asked the HRD ministry, and it is in the Women’s Policy (draft) too, that drivers, conductors and non-teaching staff in a school should be women,” the WCD minister told PTI. The National Women’s Policy (Draft) was agreed by a bunch of ministers led by external affairs minister, Sushma Swaraj and is pending before the Cabinet.

The cases of child abuse are on the rise. A seven year-old-student of Ryan International School, Gurgaon, was killed allegedly by a school bus conductor for resisting assault last week. On Sunday, a five-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a peon in a Shahdara school.
