Nothing to Fear Day 2023: History, Dates and Facts

Nothing To Fear Day is annually observed on May 27. On this date in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Fear is a necessary and natural survival mechanism. However, anger can be a negative emotion when it leads to irrational behaviour. When we allow fear to rule our lives, we see things differently, become more cautious and timid, and may overreact to potentially hazardous situations in ways that endanger ourselves and others. Nothing To Fear Day is a time for reflection and identification of our anxieties. It motivates us to do things that prevent us from achieving our full potential.

HISTORY OF NOTHING TO FEAR DAY

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also known as F.D.R., was an American politician and lawyer who served as the United States’ 32nd president from 1933 to 1945. As a member of the Democratic Party, he won four presidential elections and became a significant figure in 20th-century international affairs. Roosevelt commanded the federal government during the Great Depression, implementing his New Deal legislation in response to the nation’s worst economic crisis. As the dominant leader of his party, he established the New Deal Coalition, which characterised modern liberalism in the United States for the first two decades of the 20th century.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States on Saturday, March 4, 1933, at the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The inauguration occurred after Roosevelt’s overwhelming victory in the 1932 presidential election. With the nation mired in the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s inaugural address was avidly awaited. The address, which was heard by tens of millions of Americans due to its nationwide radio broadcast, set the tone for Roosevelt’s swift response to the situation.

Roosevelt proceeded to deliver his 20-minute, 1,883-word inaugural address, in which he detailed his plan to combat the Great Depression. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” is one of the most famous and often-quoted passages from his speech. Since then, the proverb has been used to combat any anxiety that prevents us from being our best selves. It has inspired numerous generations. Nothing To Fear Day is a remembrance of F.D.R.’s enduring and potent message.
