Former politician Narayan Sahu has become an inspiration to many as he walks down the academic lanes at the age of 81, with not the steps of teaching but learning with youth.

Narayan Sahu, a former Member of Legislative Assembly for two terms and a Member of Parliament for one term, has quit politics and started leading a student’s life by staying in a hostel of Utkal University, Odisha to complete his PhD in Philosophy.

Sahu had not been able to complete his higher education as he belonged to a backward region of Odisha where only a few get chance to go for higher studies. After years of struggle and the success in politics, Sahu decided to quit politics as he felt that principles are slowly fading away from the same.

Sahu completed his post-graduation in philosophy subject at the age of 73 (in 2011) from Utkal University. He also completed M Phil programme in 2012-13 before registering for PhD programme in Philosophy on February 3, 2016. The topic of his research is ‘Philosophy of Srimad Bhagabata of Jagannath Das: A conceptual exploration’.

As a PhD scholar he chose a room to spend with a common scholar. He currently lives in a normal room of the institute’s hostel consisting of a small bed covered with mosquito net, a table filled with books, study materials and some photographs of his family members. Sahu formed a unique bond with the students of the university by sharing his experiences in a light-hearted manner and mingling with young students of the hostel.
