A 12-hour bandh called by Central Action Committee and District Bar Association demanding permanent bench in Orissa High Court premises meant that the life in the district came to a halt.

The strike was called demanding the implementation of Jaswant Singh Commission’s recommendation of creating a permanent High Court Bench in the district. Proceedings of various courts were affected as the lawyers cease to work.

The protests kicked off at 6am on Monday and will stop at the end of the 12-hour period, at 6pm. The members of the associations involved in initiating the bandh burnt tyres at various places, blocking roads and traffic. The Borigumma-Bargarh road saw the protestors picketing. The lawyers had earlier called for a bandh in all government offices in December last year. The shut was a success as it witnessed decent success.

Most of the shops remained closed with the movement of heavy vehicles seeing a halt due to the bandh call. Central Action Committee and District Bar Association are asking for a permanent High Court bench in Kalahandi.

Whereas, demanding a permanent high court bench in western Orissa, the lawyers called for a 3-day economic blockage in the 4 districts of the state, namely, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jhursuguda and Sundargarh.
