Flying for the first time, a flyer identified as Abhijit Kumar created a row of panic among passengers on GoAir’s Delhi-Patna flight G8149, last Saturday (September 22) when he accidentally tried to open the aircraft’s exit door mid-air mistaking it with lavatory door.

The crew was alerted about the incident by the youth’s fellow travelers on-board who saw him move towards the washroom but open the exit door instead. Luckily, due to the air pressure difference he could not to do so and was handed over to security personnel after the plane with 150 passengers on board landed safely at its destination – Jayaprakash Narayan International airport in Patna. The first time flyer was released later once the authorities were convinced he had made a genuine mistake.

During questioning, passenger Kumar in his late 20’s, argued that since he was travelling in an aircraft for the first time, he mistook the exit door as washroom door.

“I mistook the word lavatory written near the exit gate as the door of the toilet and hence tried to open it. I had no other intention as such,” the youth told the police.

Station house officer (SHO) of the airport police station, Mohammad Sanowar Khan, confirmed that the incident occurred due to confusion, the Deccan Herald reported. He was later released on a personal bond on Sunday.
