Paddle for Perthes Disease Awareness Day 2023: Strive against Perthes Disease Every year, Awareness Day is observed on the last Saturday of July. This year’s date is July 29. Perthes disease, also known as Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease (L.C.P.D. ), is a hip disorder in children caused by a disruption in the blood supply to the hip bone. Without enough blood, bones are brittle and do not heal adequately. To commemorate this day, an annual paddling event is conducted, as paddling does not require the use of legs, allowing people with this disease to participate and raise awareness.
PADDLE FOR PERTHES DISEASE AWARENESS DAY: ITS HISTORY
Perthes disease is one of the most prevalent hip disorders in young infants, affecting approximately 5.5 out of every 100,000 children each year. The lifetime risk of developing the disease for a child is approximately 1 in 1,200. Approximately three to five times more boys are affected than females.
Rarely do new instances of Perthes’ disease occur after 14 years of age. Despite the paucity of reliable epidemiological data in the Southern Hemisphere, white northern Europeans seem to be affected more frequently than other ethnicities.
In 1897, Karel Maydl first described the disease, and in 1909, Henning Waldenstrom conducted personal investigation and identified the disease as tuberculosis. In 1910, however, three independent physicians concluded that the disease was unrelated to tuberculosis. Legg–Calvé–Perthes is named for the following three physicians: Arthur Legg, Jacques Calvé, and Georg Perthes.
In 2010, the inaugural Paddle for Perthes Disease Awareness Day was announced on Twitter and Facebook. Even though no events were planned, the occasion was still commemorated.
As part of the British Orthopaedic Surgery Surveillance research, a nationwide research began collecting data on every case of Perthes’ disease in the United Kingdom in 2016. Prior to launching extensive clinical trials to determine the most effective treatment, this seeks to collect fundamental disease knowledge.
Every hospital in England, Scotland, and Wales that treats Perthes’ disease is compiling new case information. The U.K. ethics committee and N.H.S. research approval teams in England, Scotland, and Wales have granted national approval for the study. The National Institute of Health Research and the Alder Hey Charity fund the study.
FIVE FACTS REGARDING PERTHES DISEASE
- One in every 1,200 infants between the ages of three and eleven is diagnosed with Perthes’ disease.
- The majority of children with Perthes disease recover, but it may take two or more years for the bone to regenerate and return to normal.
- Children with Perthes Disease should refrain from high-impact activities such as sprinting and jumping until the hip joint has fully healed.
- Still unknown is the aetiology of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease.
- Although the disease is prevalent among infants, it can also affect adults.
