Parliament will be opening today after a brief Christmas recess.

Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor will move a resolution disapproving the Triple Talaq Bill as it will be among the topmost priority today after its promulgation as an ordinance in September. Congress has agreed to participate in the debate, whereas BJP has issued a whip to all its Member of Parliaments to be present in the House.

The Triple Talaq Bill makes the practice among Muslims a penal offence. Under the proposed law, giving instant triple talaq shall be illegal and void, the husband could attract a jail term up to 3 years.

In Rajya Sabha, Maneka Gandhi, Union Cabinet Minister for Women & Child Development will move The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill, 2018. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to make a statement regarding, ‘Harassment of religious minorities in neighbouring countries.’

The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill and the Companies (Amendment) Bill might also get taken up in the Lok Sabha.


Winter session of the Parliament began on Tuesday on December 11. The house was adjourned after paying obituary references to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Union Minister Ananth Kumar, Bhola Singh, MI Shanavas and Mohammad Asrarul Haque.

The opening of the session coincided with assembly election results in five states- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram.
