Pastor Appreciation Day 2023: National Clergy Appreciation Month (also known as Pastor Appreciation Month) is observed in October, and Pastor Appreciation Day, a day set aside to honor clergy, is October 8 this year. The month recognizes the contributions and services of pastors, priests, reverends, ministers, and all other clergymen. On Pastor Appreciation Day, churchgoers gather to convey their gratitude to pastors and other church staff. Numerous congregations mark the occasion by collecting a special offering to bless their clergy. Others may express their appreciation by providing their pastors with meals, presents, and even paid vacations.
The History of Pastor Appreciation Day.
Since 1992, the month of October has been designated as Clergy Appreciation Month in the United States. The call to recognize the contributions of our church leaders dates back to the time of the apostle Paul. As the founder of a number of the earliest Christian churches, Paul exhorted the congregation to accord ‘double honor’ to the elders who administered the church’s affairs. He was particularly concerned with recognizing “those whose work is preaching and teaching.” The apostle Paul also urged Christian communities to recognize those “who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord, and who admonish you.” He believed that it is essential to Christian beliefs to hold these spiritual leaders in “the highest regard and love because of their work.”
It wasn’t until 1992 that Focus on the Family, an American Christian organization, began promoting Clergy Appreciation Month as a national month of observance, despite clergymen’s special stature in their parishes. In highlighting Clergy Appreciation Month, Focus on the Family urged that there be a national celebration of the clergymen, who play key roles in the functioning of the Church.
From Clergy Appreciation Month came the concept of designating a particular day to honor the clergy. This day gained the name Pastor Appreciation Day. This day is also known as Clergy Appreciation Day. As of 2019, 458,411 individuals are employed as clerical workers in the United States.
