Philip Alfred Mickelson was born in San Diego, California, on June 16, 1970, to airline pilot and former naval aviator Philip Mickelson and Mary Santos. Mickelson, who was raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, is of Portuguese, Swedish, and Sicilian descent. His maternal grandfather, Alfred Santos, was a caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links and took young Phil Mickelson there to play golf. Although right-handed, Mickelson learned to play golf with his left hand by observing his right-handed father’s stroke and imitating it. He attended Arizona State University in Tempe on a golf scholarship and became the symbol of amateur golf in the United States.
