Placements By Branch 2024: In premier engineering colleges, between 40% and 50% of electrical engineering (EE) and electronics and communication engineering (ECE) students are still unemployed.

Even popular branches of engineering that usually see high placement and salary rates have struggled this year, according to data from Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT).

The placement process, which began in late 2023 – December 1 at the older IITs – continues. Data on placements is accessed through Right to Information requests.

The 10 had not placed 100% of their electrical engineering or BTech electronics and communication engineering students.

The placement rate for EE at IIT Hyderabad was 78.33% until April 2024, compared to 93.18% in 2022-23, albeit at the end of the placement season.

At IIT Bhilai and IIT Jammu, the lowest placement rates were 18% and 30.56%, respectively. The average salary package at both institutions is between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 14 lakh.

IIT Palakkad had the highest package for EE or ECE at Rs 18.79 lakh per annum; NIT Patna had the lowest average salary of Rs 7.6 lakh per annum.

This year, even top engineering colleges have had difficulty placing students.

In December, placements at the most established IITs began slowly with fewer and smaller offers; placements at NITs also declined.

In the winter of 2023, the tepid response to placements made for a very stressful and hectic final semester for even the most popular courses, including BTech computer science and engineering (CSE).

“Companies are recruiting less this time. For instance, companies like large software companies (Microsoft) have not hired any full-time employees and just provided pre-placement offers (PPOs). Number of offers and hiring have decreased from last year. Around 20 companies came but didn’t select anyone. The scenario is not good at all,” said Rajib Kr Chatterjee, assistant professor and member of Career Development Centre, NIT Durgapur.

IITs don’t place more than half of EE graduates

Across all branches, IIT Jammu had an overall placement rate of 85% in 2022-23. This year, it appears to be struggling.

By mid-April, IIT Bhilai and IIT Palakkad had placed fewer than half of the electrical engineering students enrolled for placement.

In addition, around 50% of students at NIT Uttarakhand were unemployed by April. NIT Durgapur had the highest placement rate for electrical engineering with 75% students accepting offers, a decline from 2022-23, when 89.66 % of students from the EE branch were placed.

Both NIT Patna and NIT Raipur had about 40% EE students seeking jobs in April.
