Players need to be honest & open about mental fatigue: Domingo

Dhaka, June 8 (IANS) Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo has stated that he wants to create such an environment where players can openly speak out regarding mental fatigue.

Domingo’s calming words come after former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza had said they don’t get the opportunity to speak about mental health as compared to other players around the world.

Domingo said players’ need to take a break should be respected as it is an important aspect of the game.

“Regarding mental fatigue I think it’s something players need to be honest and open about,” Domingo was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“Not all players will be comfortable to talk about those aspects, but we want to create an environment where in our team, our players can openly talk about how they are feeling and whether they need a break, and whether it’s mental or physical, we have got to respect that because it’s an important aspect to the game,” he added.

Mortaza had earlier said that if someone talks about mental health then he is thought to be making excuses.

“Mental health is not as important to us here. Our social reality is different. We don’t have the opportunity here to talk about depression as Marcus Trescothick or Glenn Maxwell can,” Mortaza was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“If someone says he’s not feeling good then we may assume he is scared or making an excuse. Many people even do not feel that way. Those who do, do not express or feel the need to do so,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh cricketers were recently told it isn’t safe to train yet considering the ongoing situation related to COVID-19 pandemic, despite the sport trying to find its feet back in some parts of the world.

Cricketers in England and West Indies have been taking part in training sessions for a while now while Sri Lanka and Afghanistan players also started their respective sessions recently.
