Poll-related violence continues in West Bengal

Kolkata, May 2 (IANS) A clash broke out between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists at Uluberia in the Howrah district on Thursday as sporadic incidents of poll-related violence continued in the state.

The situation in Uluberia’s Rajapur was tense since Wednesday evening after BJP supporters allegedly attacked a public meeting, organised in support of Trinamool’s Lok Sabha candidate Sajda Ahmed. The BJP has fielded actor-turned-politician Joy Banerjee in the constituency.

The miscreants damaged stage, smashed chairs and tore off Trinamool’s flags and festoons, forcing cancellation of the meeting. The incident angered Trinamool activists and clashes broke out between the supporters of the two parties in several places on Wednesday evening as well as Thursday morning.

“The police have arrested one person for attacking the venue and are looking for others. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed in the area. The situation is under control,” an officer from Uluberia police station said.

Meanwhile, post-poll violence in parts of Asansol and Birbhum continues with attacks on polling agents and workers of the opposition parties. Both the Lok Sabha seats went to the polls last Monday.

The BJP alleged its two polling agents from Asansol’s Barabani — Ramlal Kisku and Haradhan Soren — were assaulted by Trinamool Congress goons.

“Kisku’s hands were fractured in the attack. He also sustained a grievous head injury and have received 35 stitches,” a BJP leader said.
