After setting aside his family dispute, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav is all set to move on to the next level of dealing, ahead of the UP polls. Akhilesh is willing to contest together and form an alliance with Congress as he believes it will help him counter rivals Mayawati and the BJP in Uttar Pradesh better.

A deal with the Congress will be announced “in a day or two,” he said to NDTV on Tuesday. But, the Congress obstructed him from declaring the partnership at a press conference in Delhi.

The 43-year-old chief minister so far was preoccupied with disputes with his father, Mulayam Singh Yadav. The family tussles for power ended with Election Commission granting the ‘cycle’ symbol to Akhilesh on Monday.

Earlier, both factions in the Samajwadi Party, one led by Mulayam Singh and the other by son Akhilesh, have staked their claim over the party symbol in front of the Election Commission. Akhilesh had declared himself the SP’s national president on January 1, and assigned margdarshak’s role to his father Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The Akhilesh-led faction had submitted affidavits, signed by party legislators, to the EC claiming ownership to the party symbol as he enjoyed the support of the majority of the party’s members of Parliament and legislatures. On Saturday, the EC heard the two loudmouthed factions.

Throughout the six-hour long hearing, both the factions staked their claim to the symbol.  While Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal represented Akhilesh’s side, former Solicitor-General of India Mohan Parasaran headed the squad signifying Mulayam Singh Yadav’s side.

Meanwhile, Mulayam Singh Yadav declared that he would fight against son Akhilesh Yadav if he did not shed his “negative approach” towards the Muslims.

On Monday, the issue of who is boss was certain by the Election Commission that ruled that Akhilesh Yadav has the backing of most of the leaders and is therefore in control of the legit version of the outfit and not a spin-off as his father had alleged.

In the alliance that Akhilesh Yadav plans, the Samajwadi Party may contest for about 300 of UP’s 403 assembly seats, while the Congress could contest about 75, and the RLD and other parties could contest 25-30.  It is basically set on the Bihar experiment, where Nitish Kumar was re-elected as CM after tactically partnering with old rival Lalu Yadav’s RJD and the Congress.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases starting from February 11 and votes will be counted on March 11.
