Prom Day History
The prom originated as a coed event at the collegiate level, intended to teach decorum to a brand-new class of university graduates. The event was first documented in the journal of an Amherst College student who recounted his prom experience at the adjacent university. The occasion was increasingly commemorated by high school students as the decades passed. Through the 1930s, high schools nationwide initiated various types of end-of-year festivities, including formals and Spring Flings.
The evolving tides of a progressive society began to be reflected in the prom, which was transformed into a nocturnal occasion and adorned with a more opulent ambiance. Not until the 1950s, however, did prom attain its pinnacle. The enduring impact of the burgeoning postwar economy and the golden age of Hollywood on the American psyche was also manifested in this yearly commemoration. End-of-year celebrations became a focal point of public schools in the United States, as parents began funding their children’s proms.
Following a temporary decline that ensued in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, prom evenings experienced a resurgence in cultural prominence through the incorporation of various movie depictions.
Prom is currently a juncture through which a high school senior transitions into the “real world.” PromGirl, a high school fashion and prom costume brand, established National Prom Day in 2016 to honor this historic occasion. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), an organization that educates children about traffic safety, melancholy, bullying, and substance abuse, collaborated with PromGirl in its inaugural year.
Over the subsequent years, PromGirl has partnered with numerous youth-oriented nonprofit organizations, including The Garden of Dreams. The primary objective in establishing this holiday is to pay homage to the profound impact that prom has on individuals while simultaneously bringing attention to the challenges that American youth face.
